Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
