EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
