British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
