The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
